Community Spotlight: Darika

Community Spotlight is all about giving artists, storytellers, or video tutorial extraordinaires a bit of extra attention for all the hard work they do. Whether through it's through helpful advice or hilarious jokes their efforts help to make Warframe's community so warm and welcoming.

If you've ever wondered what the Valkyr, Mag, or the Lotus may look like under their signature helmets then you've likely encountered Darika's art for yourself. When she's not exploring the tragic history of Excalibur's horn or matching Pokemon with their Tenno counterpart Darika's incredible illustrative style breathes a unique life into each Warframe -- giving a unique perspective that often sparks discussion on the true nature of the Lotus' Warriors.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Darika and my nickname is PAINT (each Thai is named with a lovely nickname when we was born.) Some call me with my in-game name 9tailsFox.

I may look like a playful girl, but actually I am quite bashful and quiet. Every now and then when I want to make friends with someone my shyness always blocks me from starting a conversation. I realize that approaching strangers and talking to them directly was not quite working so I break this barrier by drawing them something to show that “Hey! I wanna know you”. Offering my art to someone is also a good way to express my appreciation towards them too.

I love playing games, but no game is as addictive as Warframe. I love drawing Warframe characters so much, especially women. And yes, I can say that I am a big fan of The Lotus! *waves glowing sticks*

How long have you been illustrating for?

Well, my father is an artist. He told me that he started teaching me how to draw since I was a 3 month old baby. I worked with watercolor, acrylic paint, and oil paint -- actually everything related to traditional painting before I started digital painting 5 years ago. I mostly draw cartoon characters.

Mag was my first Warframe fan art (27th May 2013), around 2 years ago.

What inspired you to start playing Warframe?

My friends, my old friends. They persuaded me to try this new game. They said: “Yo! Today we gonna be Space Ninjas!” And I was like, “What? A Space Ninja?”

I didn’t think I would love to play Sci-fi themed game, but when I started Warframe I enjoyed it a lot. This game has completely changed my thoughts. The game’s character design, art direction, weapon design and everything looks unique and this made me feel so excited. Of course, lovely DE too. The more I connect with DE (both in-game and on Twitter) the more I feel happy.

Yeah, I think, Warframe is my life and the best game ever.

Many of your illustrations feature Warframes without helmets, with faces imagined by you. How do you decide how they look when unmasked?

I look at their helmets and start to imagine the hair style they would have in the real world. Some Warframes are very difficult for me to sketch out such as Banshee. And if it is a male character, I will give him one of my favorite hairstyles. (LOL)

Mostly I recreate their looks by studying their actions and abilities, but sometimes I even give them a new personification.

What's your favorite character to draw?

The Lotus, of course. She is my favorite in this game. She speaks to us all the time, but I felt like she is a mysterious girl. I enjoy playing this game more and more because I want to hear her voice… her beautiful voice. ♥

I'm really keen to learn more about her personality, if she has one. In many of her dialogue, it seems like she tries to express her feelings and this makes me so excited. Thank you DE for keep updating her story. By the way, listening The Lotus’s voice everyday made me suddenly notice once Rebecca was sick… by just hearing poor Rebecca say only one word (LOL).

Do you have any advice for other aspiring artists?

I can say that my painting skill has improved as this game grows. Actually, my ability is not superior to the other artists. No need to compare who is the best because everyone has their own ‘signature’. If you love to create Warframe fanart, please keep doing it. In my opinion making fanart is the best way to tell about your feeling over this game, and also conveying our thankfulness to the developers and staff for giving us wonderful experiences.

I love to see everyone’s work. I would like you to know that a lot of people appreciate your art more than you expected! I adore each and every piece of your art as they are the greatest way to show how much we enjoy this amazing game.

Thanks for spending some time with us today, and for sharing your passion with the community in all of your incredible artwork! An extra-special thanks goes to Darika's friend Elissse, who gave us both a bit of help in translation.
